Welcome to my new blog! Calling it a blog feels weird, and I’ve been liking the term “digital diary” or “digital journal”, but I feel like that’s just a very current way to refer to social media and will be outdated soon. So it goes.
Anyhow, I want to create more. The transition from college to industry was hard – not because of my actual job, but because of the changes in how I spend my time. Suddenly, I have so much time, yet it feels like no time. I need excitement and change and movement. It’s hard to not feel like I’m wasting away sometimes.
I enjoy my work, but I get in my head about routine and repetition. The other day I was looking back at the RedBubble account I had as a teenager and how that motivated me and gave me something to do (and ultimately pays for my Starbucks today). I loved coming up with new ideas, trying to promote new designs on various social medias, looking into different selling platforms, etc. It was more than just making a design in Photoshop; there was a whole process that went into it, and I loved doing all the steps. It also gave me something to dream about. Maybe I could take it further, sell in-person one day, move into other products or types of designs, have an actual business.
I miss having big dreams. They aren’t gone, but it feels subdued somehow. I don’t feel like myself without them. Maybe I just need to start making again, so here I am.
As a software engineer, it feels like I should try to code a blog, but I want this to be a side hobby and separate from what I already do all day. Instead, I’m excited to try out WordPress in 2024. It’s been on my radar for so long, and I remember playing around with it as a teenager, along with other website/blog creation services. It was experimenting with things like this that made me first interested in web development; it’s interesting to see how much the internet and those sites have changed since then.
Now, to introduce myself. I’m Syd, 25 years old, and a software engineer. I feel like I have such a clear idea in my head of the life I want and I’m trying to make that a reality. So welcome to my digital diary, where I hope to document that process. This is also a part of that life I want; not in blog-form, specifically, but the making part. To be comfortable putting my ideas and experiences out there, and all the creativity and connection that comes along in a project like this.
On here, you’ll find me sharing about my travels, maybe documenting creative and technical projects from time-to-time, trying to learn as much as possible about personal and professional interests, and life working remotely as a software engineer. Maybe we’ll see a digital nomad story arc soon, stay tuned.
Cheers to making.
If reading isn’t your ideal format, you can also find me on Instagram and Pinterest where I post on both. Or, if you’re interested in what I’ve been making for the past couple years, check out my Etsy!
